Our History

2018-2019

The Learning Community Foundation was created by action of the Learning Community Coordinating Council in October, 2018 and the Foundation received approval from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, “supporting organization” a year later in October, 2019.

2020

The Foundation formed a Board of Directors and began raising funds in January, 2020.

In its first year, 2020, the Foundation began actively and successfully fundraising and building operational capacity. The Foundation board raised over $100,000 of which $70,000 was designated for a special campaign to respond to the emergency needs of families during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Based on surveys of parents who were participating in programs taking place at the Learning Community Centers of North and South Omaha, the Foundation was able to address an otherwise unmet need for diapers, wipes and formula for families over a 7-month period. This better enabled those parents to continue to participate and engage in the Center’s programs, even during the pandemic, albeit remotely. Beyond

Going forward, the Foundation is in continuous communication with the Learning Community Coordinating Council and staff to identify where private funds can make the most difference. Once the Foundation is able to hire professional staff, proceeds are expected to grow.
